The hardware is chosen for this ridge, not just this room
Powder-coated aluminium and sealed components on anything exposed outside, cord and chain tensioners fitted as standard, and motorised control wherever a hard-to-reach picture window or a hail-season awning makes cords the wrong answer. It’s the unglamorous part of the job — and the part that keeps working after the first big Pretoria thunderstorm.

Built for a ridge, not a valley floor
“The view is the whole reason for the big glass. It shouldn’t be the reason the lounge is unusable by four o’clock.”
- Faerie Glen sits along one of Pretoria East’s prominent ridgelines, and its upper and estate pockets are built specifically to hold the view over the valley — which means wide, often unbroken glazing on the view-facing elevation.
- That glass carries the highveld’s extreme UV load through the afternoon. Low-openness sunscreen fabric (3–5%) cuts the glare and heat without giving up the view it was built to frame.
- Ridge positions catch more wind than the valley floor, and Pretoria’s summer thunderstorms arrive fast in the afternoon — exterior products get a wind sensor and auto-retract as standard, not an optional extra.
- Highveld hail is a genuine seasonal risk for exposed glazing and patios — a retractable awning or roller shutter that closes in time survives; fixed fabric takes the hit.
- Wide picture windows and double-volume glazing common on this ridge are often out of comfortable reach for chains — motorisation is less a luxury here and more the practical answer.

Before you enquire
Do you cover Faerie Glen and the surrounding Pretoria East estates?
Yes — Faerie Glen is our home ground, and we measure and fit across Silver Lakes, Mooikloof, Woodhill Golf Estate and Boardwalk Meander too. If you’re just outside those, ask on the enquiry form and we’ll confirm.
How do you deal with the afternoon glare on ridge-facing windows?
Low-openness sunscreen fabric (typically 3–5%) is the default for view-facing glass — it cuts glare and UV heat while keeping the view you built the house for. For bedrooms that need real darkness at night, a double roller pairs sunscreen with a blockout fabric on one bracket.
Will an awning or external screen actually survive a highveld thunderstorm?
Only within its rated wind limits, and only reliably if it retracts before the gust hits. That’s why we specify a motor plus a wind sensor on ridge-position awnings and zip screens as standard — it retracts on its own rather than relying on someone being home.
What about hail damage to exposed glazing and patios?
Retractable products that close in time are protected; fixed fabric takes the hit. Roller shutters and sensor-retracted awnings are the two products most Faerie Glen homeowners ask about specifically for hail season — we’ll talk through what suits your exposure at the measure.
What about child safety with cords and chains?
Every corded or chained blind is fitted with a tensioner as standard. For nurseries and kids’ rooms we generally recommend wand-tilt, cordless or motorised options — ask your consultant and it’ll be built into the quote.
How long from measure to fitting?
It depends on the products and fabrics chosen, since everything is made to order. Your written quotation states the lead time for your specific order, so there are no vague promises up front.
